Women’s Lib

design

Women's Lib is an intersectional feminist toolkit for the savvy library patron. In the United Kingdom, where I went to graduate school, over 72% of design students are women, but 89% of creative directors working in the industry are men. When the canon of art and design is largely dominated by white men, this leaves a dearth of information about underrepresented women working in the same industry.

My major project from design school, Women's Lib, seeks to bring to light this huge gender discrepancy: I created a toolkit of graphic-based actions one can use to challenge the status quo in the very place that this knowledge is curated and kept – the library.

The contents of the toolkit mimicked tools traditionally used in libraries: stamps, recommendation notes, library cards, and bookmarks.

The interventions were housed in a custom-made backpack, with pockets and slots for every item.

The Women’s Lib toolkit includes:

Library cards ❋ Bookmarks ❋ User’s guide ❋ Shelf recommendation notes ❋ Custom stamp & inkpad ❋ A2 posters ❋ USB key with digital resources

Dearest Library Patron, it has come to our attentionthat fewer than half the essaysin this book were writtenby women. We know you feel terrible about this and will seek morediverse resources in the future. All our love, Women’s Lib ❋
